Grimwade was a small logging settlement decades ago but nothing remains of the town now except for a few fruit trees that blossom in spring and the two dams. It is now a free camping area that those wanting to get away totally, and don’t mind roughing it a little, will love!
The larger dam is very popular for swimming on the weekends but campers often nestle in to the openings on the edges. There is also a large, flat area set back from the dam that is often used by larger rigs and caravans. This is a fabulous site that allows you to enjoy the beautiful bird life and the peace and quiet which is only broken by the occasional logging trucks which pass (and create a bit of dust) three or four times a day. We highly recommend it having stayed there several times.
A second dam is not suitable for swimming but does look very picturesque and has plenty of room for tents and caravans around it. It is within walking distance of the swimming dam.
Enter at the very end of Grimwade Road (just before the Greenbushes turn off) which comes off South Western Hwy just before Balingup. There are several tracks that all lead to the dams though some are a bit better than others. Although it was accessible by 2WD when we last visited in a motor home, our suggestion is that if you haven’t been there before, either speak to the locals, unhitch the van and drive in or walk in first to make sure that the road is in good condition.
