Lawns
Home owners often underestimate the value of a lawn. It’s not just about looking beautiful and setting off the colours in the garden. A lovely lawn can increase the value of a home, provide play areas for the kids to get them outdoors and the colour green is naturally relaxing and calming. But, even more importantly to West Australians is that research has shown that a lush green lawn cools the house because, as the breeze moves over the moist grass, the air reduces in temperature which then cools the inside of the home as well.
Of course, there is the issue with having to maintain lawn and so some are tempted to replace it with artificial grass or perhaps pavers which offer no cooling effect at all and also have a negative environmental impact because the beneficial microorganisms in the soil won’t survive. Besides, 30 minutes of lawn mowing can provide the same amount of exercise as a 30 minute trip to the gym. Bonus!
The environmental, economical and social benefits provided by having green lawn in both the front and back of the house can’t be disputed but in the end, lawn just looks fantastic. There are few things in life as relaxing as sitting on the verandah with a drink in your hand taking in the sight and smell of a freshly mown lawn.
