Beside Balingup Brook, this grassed and shaded spot is within walking distance of the town and right next door to the football oval.  It is intended as an overnight stay but it is possible to stay for three days.  Although just a short stay facility, this is a lovely spot to stay.

The town of Balingup is well worth spending some time.  It is a tiny place that many people just pass through on their way somewhere else but it is a fabulous place with something for everyone.  The eateries alone cover delicious pies, a French bakery, organic cafe, gourmet deli and a very relaxed Tavern.  The shops include fruit wines, beads, jewellers, clothing and herbal products.  All of that is within the kilometre of the main road but venture out and there's even more to experience.  Next time you get the chance, be sure to stop the car, get the dog out and take a walk through Balingup.

For more information, visit the Balingup Tourism website.

BALINGUP, Grimwade

PETS: Dogs on leads.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE: No facilities
ACCESS ROAD: Unsealed entrance from sealed road
BEST TIME TO VISIT: All year round

Grimwade was a small logging settlement but nothing remains of the town now except for a few fruit trees that blossom in spring and the two dams.

The larger dam is very popular for swimming on the weekends but campers often nestle in to the openings on the edges.  There is also a large, flat area that is often used by larger rigs and caravans.  This is a fabulous site that allows you to enjoy the beautiful bird life and the peace and quiet which is only broken by the occasional logging trucks which pass (and create a bit of dust) three or four times a day.  We highly recommend it having stayed there several times.

A second dam is not suitable for swimming but does look very picturesque and has plenty of room for tents and caravans around it.  It is within walking distance of the swimming dam.

Enter at the very end of Grimwade Road (just before the Greenbushes turn off) which comes off South Western Hwy just before Balingup.  There are several tracks that all lead to the dams though some are a bit better than others.  Accessible by 2WD.

Fonty's Pool is one of WA's treasures having been used by family fun for decades.  The pool was built by the Fontiana family and first opened in 1925.  It's fed from the brook and is like a fairy tale with the manicured green lawns and beautiful trees that surround it.  There's nothing quite like watching the kids float on the large tractor tyres in the pool whilst sitting under the huge shade trees.

Although the caravan park looked like it was going to close, it was salvaged a few years ago and has undergone a total make-over so that now it has everything that a family would need to enjoy itself.  It is a truly relaxing place.

Manjimup itself is central to some of the most picturesque areas of the south-west including Pemberton and the Warren/Donnelly/Blackwood Rivers.  Visit the truffle companies, wineries and truffle farms or just float around Fonty's Pool.

Having experienced Fonty's Pool ourselves, we highly recommend it!  For more information visit http://www.fontyspool.com.au/ .

Big Valley Campsite is one of those unexpected finds that you almost don't want to tell anyone about.  We toyed with keeping it our secret but in the end, we were so impressed that we have to share this treasure.

This is a working farm surrounded by stunning scenery of grass paddocks, majestic eucalypts and curious sheep.  It's just ten minutes from Margaret River and borders state forests.  Being central to the tourist region it is within close proximity to wineries, restaurants, art and crafts and canoeing.  Or, if that all sounds too strenuous, relax back at your campsite in this very tranquil environment.

There are a limited number of powered sites so it is best to book ahead.  There are two sections to the site which allows large groups to have their own facilities and camp kitchen without disturbing others.

The showers, toilets and laundries are unisex but incredibly clean and well maintained.  They are cleverly built in a rustic fashion in an open, undercover area but despite this, privacy is assured.  And the camp kitchens have every facility possible including microwaves, cook tops, fridges, freezer, TV and pool table.  These facilities are very unique and well maintained.

For more information and images visit the Big Valley website.

There are numerous camping sites along the Blackwood River between Margaret River and Nannup.  Most of them are small, shady areas along the river with no facilities but the general rule is, if the track is well used, you will find a decent spot.  Access tracks are usually narrow and a bit rough although most are suitable for 2WD.  Look for well used tracks as these are more likely to lead to good campsites.

Sues Bridge is a popular campsite 9km north of the Brockman Highway on Sues Road.  It's on the western side of the road and is 200m south of the actual Sues Bridge.  It offers a relaxing place to camp within a magnificent forest setting.  No generators are allowed.

Recreation in this area includes fishing for silver and black bream, marroning in season, swimming and canoeing.  Plus, the birdlife is magnificent.
